Reading the passage

The second paragraph gives several reasons Typhlodromus work well: appetite, reproductive capacity, seasonal timing, and survival when prey is scarce. We need one of those stated advantages, not another trait that would merely sound useful.

Working the answers

  • A

We know parathion kills the predator. Nothing establishes resistance to most other insecticides.

  • B

No information tells us that Typhlodromus have no predators of their own.

  • C

Different climates and geographic regions aren't compared.

  • D

The supply of cyclamen mites isn't constant. Their numbers dwindle in winter, which is why the predators' ability to use another food source matters.

  • E
    Correct

The text expressly identifies a capacity to stay alive when prey is scarce (paragraph 2). In winter, the predators live on honeydew produced by aphids and white flies. They can survive the shortage even though they reproduce only when feeding on cyclamen mites.
