Reading the passage
Why include Germany in this discussion? Dove questions the restriction she sees in the United States, and in Germany she encounters poets writing plays, novelists writing libretti, and playwrights writing novels. Here are writers moving between forms without treating that as an obvious problem.
What we’re looking for
The experience gives her a concrete contrast to the American practice she questions. I would look for an answer connecting that experience to her view of genre boundaries, rather than treating the detail as a disconnected fact about her life.
Working the answers
- A
The text contrasts Germany with the United States, not with all English-speaking societies. Nothing tells us that Britain, Canada, or Australia shares the American restriction.
- BCorrect
Seeing writers move among forms reinforced Dove's conviction that rigid separation makes little sense. Their practice showed that the restriction she questioned wasn't inevitable or universal.
- C
We learn what she observed in Germany, not that studying abroad caused her literary strengths. An experience that supports her opinion isn't automatically an explanation of her talent.
- D
It is a biographical detail, but it has an argumentative job: it supplies a contrast that supports her objection to the American division. Merely making her life more interesting misses that purpose.
- E
Reinforcement is different from origin. Before the Germany detail, we learn that she grew up loving both genres without seeing a danger in mixing them. We aren't told that Germany was where her objection began.
