Reading the passage
Before comparing analogies, get clear on the achievement we're trying to match. Dove takes narrative elements associated with fiction and brings them into poems; she also takes poetic rhythms and expression into fiction. The works borrow from each other despite the convention that says these forms should stay separate.
What we’re looking for
So the match should involve bringing elements of distinct forms together. Simply being talented at two jobs, or doing something new in one field, won't necessarily capture that relationship.
Working the answers
- A
Combining cuisines gives this a broad resemblance. Here, methods and ingredients are combined, but we aren't told that the chef challenges a convention separating the cuisines. D makes the relevant relationship clearer.
- B
The professor applies theoretical knowledge to practical filmmaking. That explains success within filmmaking, not the borrowing between forms that matters in Dove's work.
- C
This uses theater to communicate a health message. The public-health subject doesn't become a second artistic form that is blended with theater.
- DCorrect
Ballet and jazz correspond to poetry and fiction. The choreographer combines elements of both within individual dances and defies a convention in doing so. Those are the features we wanted to match.
- E
Adding guitar solos to old songs changes existing works, but it doesn't establish a combination of distinct genres. Dove's achievement isn't merely adding a new feature to something someone wrote earlier.
