The phrase "documentary record" ((17 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

There are two sources of knowledge here: documents that survived from the past and pollen that scientists can analyze now. The documentary record is the first. The opening tells us those older sources are scarce and often focus on military or commercial interests. That's the record the new pollen evidence can supplement or correct.

Working the answers

  • A

Writing down the results of pollen analysis doesn't make them the older record being checked. These are reports of the new evidence used to supplement that record.

  • B

Pollen grains are physical evidence left by plants, not documentary accounts made by people.

  • C

Current historians is the mismatch. We need surviving records from the past, not present-day descriptions of it.

  • D
    Correct

Records and maps produced at the time fit the historical documents described in the opening, including those focused on military and commercial matters.

  • E

Like C, this describes present-day historical work. The phrase refers to the older documents those historians use, not their articles analyzing the evidence.
