Reading the passage
What did Madame de La Villirouët do? She secured her own release and that of fellow prisoners through a letter campaign, then saved her husband's life by pleading his case in court. That's a concrete example of a woman acting in these events, which is exactly the surrounding paragraph's subject.
Working the answers
- A
We aren't tracing her actions to her social status. Class helps explain the makeup of the published record earlier, but this example shows what a woman did.
- B
Her activities don't explain why so few women published memoirs. That question belongs to the opening discussion of access and political conditions.
- C
The writer doesn't expose bias in her story. Her account illustrates women's activity; it isn't evidence that political allegiance inevitably distorts recollections.
- DCorrect
Paragraph 3 says that women frequently engaged in social activism, then gives us her actions as an example. Securing prisoners' release and defending her husband make that general claim specific.
- E
She is a royalist, but we aren't comparing the themes in her memoir with republican memoirs. Naming someone's allegiance doesn't turn her example into a comparison between the two camps.
