Reading the passage
We've already predicted that women were politically active during the Revolution, as their memoirs show. The examples of freeing prisoners and taking up arms make that participation concrete. That was my initial emphasis; let's see whether an answer captures it while accounting for the rest of the discussion.
Working the answers
- A
This shifts the focus to society's intolerance. Restrictions appear, but the central discussion concerns what women did and whether their accounts can be trusted. The obstacles are not the main point.
- B
This understates the support for the memoirs. The ending endorses their credibility through evidence of accuracy and personal plausibility (paragraph 3), not just subjective reliability while factual accuracy remains unsettled. It also leaves out what the accounts reveal about women's participation.
- CCorrect
This is fuller than our initial prediction in a useful way. It includes women's varied participation, but also the credibility argument developed in paragraph 2 and confirmed at the end. We shouldn't lose that substantial part of the discussion just because our first wording emphasized the women's activity.
- D
These are the doubts the writer answers. The possibility of faulty memory or partisan distortion prompts scrutiny; it isn't the final verdict that the accounts are unreliable.
- E
Earlier feminist expression doesn't establish what caused the later women's movement. “Impetus” adds that historical connection. And “regardless of their reliability” dismisses a question the writer takes time to resolve.
