Reading the passage
Paragraph 2 tells us okapis aren't as rare as some thought. Paragraph 3 explains why they seemed rare anyway: they blend in, forage alone, and stay inside the forest. That is a different job from establishing the actual population size.
Working the answers
- A
It supplies an explanation. The new questions about habitat come in the next paragraph.
- B
No theory is being rebutted here. The details develop an explanation for the animals' apparent scarcity.
- C
The preceding paragraph has already corrected the belief about rarity. This one explains why people could have formed that mistaken impression. C misses that step forward.
- DCorrect
The opening calls the details reasons for “their seeming scarcity.” Camouflage and staying away from conspicuous groups and open spaces make the animals difficult to find, even when they are nearby.
- E
This confuses seeming rare with being rare. The paragraph explains why few encounters aren't a reliable sign of a very small population.
