Reading the passage
The farmers weren't getting much rice for all their effort. Vernon suggests that caring for the land mattered because it helped make the place feel like their own. My first analogy is decorating a home to put your stamp on it.
What we’re looking for
But the final paragraph also offers a political purpose: symbolically claiming land the government had promised but failed to deed. A strong match should capture that part too. We're looking for a sense of ownership, not necessarily legal ownership.
Working the answers
- A
Improving nearby land is similar on the surface. But beautification and making boundaries don't match the stated combination of belonging and responding to an official failure.
- B
These neighbors grow vegetables to eat and sell. That's a practical return from the crop, whereas Vernon's explanation concerns the value of transforming land even when the rice scarcely repays the effort.
- C
Preventing government intervention isn't the political relationship here. The farmers may be responding to something the government failed to provide, not trying to keep officials from acting.
- DCorrect
Cleaning the lot out of a sense of ownership matches nurturing land as an extension of self and home. Protesting the city's neglect also matches the political dimension: responding to the government's failure to deliver promised land. We don't need identical government failures; we need the same relationship between caring for a place, belonging, and protest.
- E
The renovation is a means to providing childcare. Vernon's point is that transforming the land could be valuable “as an end in itself,” apart from the practical return.
