Reading the passage

We've already identified the main point: Africans introduced rice cultivation, and African Americans continued it during and after slavery for different reasons. A title should cover that whole story. It can leave out the individual motives, but it shouldn't leave out an entire part of the account.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

This covers the introduction of rice cultivation and its continuation during and after slavery. Those are the stages we followed, from the opening historical contribution through Vernon's explanations of why people kept growing rice.

  • B

Rice's economic impact isn't the subject. The cotton economy helps explain why growing rice seems puzzling; we don't learn how rice cultivation changed that economy.

  • C

This only covers the period after slavery. It leaves out the introduction of rice and its cultivation during slavery.

  • D

Cultural and political motives do appear, but we aren't surveying Africans' cultural and political contributions generally. The subject is rice cultivation; those motives help explain one part of its history.

  • E

This describes the later puzzle of growing rice in a cotton-centered tenant economy. Like C, it leaves out both the initial contribution and cultivation before slavery ended.
