Reading the passage
Our main-point prediction works for a title too: why do authoritarian rulers give up some power? Changes in society make compromise a way to protect their position. We want a title that captures that choice and the pressures behind it.
Working the answers
- A
Making a case for dissent would mean arguing that people should oppose the government. Dissent appears here as a source of pressure, not a course of action the writer sets out to recommend.
- B
Human rights abuses are mentioned as something citizens denounce. We don't get a case study of those abuses, and they aren't the overall subject.
- C
This sounds like a strategy guide for democratic coalitions. The discussion instead explains why the rulers recognize a need to change.
- DCorrect
Compromise means accepting limits through reform. Societal forces means the changing values, shifting economic interests, and growing independence of social groups. This gives us the two parts of our prediction in a concise title.
- E
Economics is one part of the explanation, but instability isn't its organizing idea. The ending shows how economic growth and social order can accelerate demands for reform. A title about instability would miss that point and the rulers' response.
