Reading the passage
Paragraph 3 introduces voir dire, then lists problems with it. People may hide real prejudices, invent prejudices to avoid jury duty, underestimate their knowledge, or give the answer a judge's question seems to invite. We're looking for that paragraph's job: explaining criticisms of this method.
Working the answers
- A
The method is new to this discussion, not a new proposal. Judges already favor it.
- BCorrect
The paragraph defines one established technique and explains why critics find it unreliable. All those examples show ways the questioning can fail to reveal a prospective juror's actual state of mind.
- C
Several criticisms of one method aren't criticisms of several methods. Paragraph 3 is about voir dire alone.
- D
Judges favor voir dire. The critics are the ones expressing doubts. Criticizing how judges phrase questions doesn't mean those judges themselves distrust the method.
- E
The paragraph presents the critics' objections; it doesn't attack their views. Their specific objections also aren't a general claim that judges can never ensure impartiality.
