Reading the passage

We've already predicted the main point: a map sense looks more promising than tracking the outward journey, but we still don't know how that sense works. Papi's smell-based version runs into problems. We need an answer that keeps both the favored explanation and the uncertainty.

Working the answers

  • A

The focus is how pigeons get home, not proving their ability is unlike every other species'. Honeybees appear as an example of one possible mechanism, not as the start of a survey establishing pigeons' uniqueness.

  • B
    Correct

Paragraph 3 calls a map sense “more promising” while saying its nature “remains mysterious.” The criticism of Papi's proposal explains why naming a map sense hasn't yet solved the problem. This captures our prediction without pretending the mechanism has been established.

  • C

The discussion raises problems with particular experiments and interpretations. It doesn't establish design flaws in a majority of experiments, and that claim would miss the central judgment about how pigeons navigate.

  • D

This recommends a research strategy. The writer assesses what the existing evidence tells us; there's no claim that this combination of research settings is the best way forward.

  • E

The short-range species illustrate tracking outward displacement. That is the alternative the writer calls unlikely, not the more promising map sense.
