Reading the passage
We need two different rock layers doing two different jobs. The waste must enter permeable rock, where liquid can move through spaces in the rock. An impermeable layer above it should separate that waste from the drinking-water aquifers. The receiving layer should also be at least 300 meters down.
What we’re looking for
Picture pumping liquid into the lower layer while the upper barrier helps keep it from the water we drink. Simply finding impermeable rock isn't enough; we still need somewhere suitable to put the waste.
Working the answers
- A
This removes the permeable receiving layer below the barrier. The method described requires porous, permeable rock into which the liquid waste can be injected. A supplies a barrier without that destination.
- BCorrect
The permeable layer at least 300 meters down can receive the waste, while the impermeable layer above it provides the intended separation from drinking water. This matches both parts of the arrangement.
- C
Impermeable layers alone don't give us the permeable, sufficiently deep receiving layer we need. Extending a barrier down from the surface doesn't describe the complete arrangement.
- D
An aquifer no deeper than 300 meters isn't the intended destination. The method aims to put the waste safely below drinking-water aquifers, not inject it into one near the surface.
- E
The impermeable layer is underneath the permeable receiving layer, rather than above it as the protective separation requires. The depth also pushes into the range where cost becomes a problem. Greater depth alone doesn't make this the ideal arrangement.
