Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: deep-well injection is cheap and efficient, but three serious problems make it risky. Industry is expected to use it more despite those problems.
What we’re looking for
Look for that central warning. An answer needn't repeat our wording or list all three risks, but it shouldn't turn the warning into reassurance.
Working the answers
- A
This adds a condition the author never establishes: that the danger comes from failing to buy expensive precautions. We aren't told that spending more solves the problems, especially the difficulty of predicting underground movement.
- B
This is the opposite of the overall message. Proper procedures and careful site selection sound sensible, but the author doesn't conclude that they make the method generally safe. Uncertainty about where the waste will go is itself one of the risks.
- C
“Wholly supplanted” would mean that this method has replaced all alternatives. We only know that its use has increased. C also leaves out the central concern about safety.
- DCorrect
“Seriously problematic” captures the risks we've identified, and “increasing use” captures the final warning about greater reliance on the method. We might have said “risky,” but this expresses the same central concern.
- E
Careful design and location could matter, but a recommendation to be careful isn't the main point. The author explains serious problems with the method rather than arguing that choosing and designing sites carefully is the solution.
