Reading the passage
Follow the transition into the last paragraph. The researchers found other possible sets of laws compatible with life. Fine-tuning has been used to support the multiverse. Does weakening that particular support mean the multiverse should be rejected?
What we’re looking for
The author answers: not necessarily. Some models of the universe's origin independently point toward a multiverse, and the concept may help resolve other puzzles. So the paragraph explains what the research does and does not imply. It is not an additional report of the researchers' calculations.
Working the answers
- A
The problem with the conventional method has already been explained. This paragraph turns to what the findings mean for the multiverse and gives reasons not to reject that concept simply because fine-tuning has been challenged.
- B
Mentioning other puzzles does not propose extending this particular research to answer them. Those puzzles are a reason the multiverse concept might remain useful, not a list of new questions for the researchers' project.
- CCorrect
Asking whether these findings undermine the multiverse hypothesis explicitly concerns their implications (paragraph 6). The two reasons that follow limit the conclusion we should draw: undermining one argument does not remove other possible support.
- D
There are two reasons, but they are not counterarguments to the finding that other arrangements could permit life. They explain why that finding can coexist with continued openness to the multiverse. Count what the reasons do, not merely how many there are.
- E
No experiment is proposed to test the conclusions. A future-research recommendation might be a familiar ending for a scientific article, but this ending addresses the significance of the findings instead.
