Reading the passage
The sentence tells us what “play the movie” means: scientists use calculations, what-if scenarios, or computer simulations to see what happens under a proposed set of laws. First choose the conditions. Then follow their consequences. Would stars form? Would the scenario run into a disaster? That is the theoretical sequence they are examining.
Working the answers
- A
The metaphor does not mean the scientists stop to acknowledge that their work is fiction. A hypothetical scenario can be useful for examining what would follow from specified conditions; calling it a movie emphasizes its unfolding, not its falsity.
- BCorrect
Following a theoretical chain of events to its conclusion is what the calculations and simulations do. They work out what would happen in that hypothetical universe, rather than simply declaring the chosen laws suitable or unsuitable.
- C
Whether the outcome is dramatic is beside the point. A disastrous result and an uneventful result would both be outcomes of the process being described.
- D
No common archetypes are identified as models for this work. The scientists begin with physical constants, not familiar heroes or story patterns.
- E
Scientists choose the starting conditions, but “play the movie” refers to the next step: seeing what those conditions produce. It does not mean intervening as the story unfolds to steer it toward a desired outcome.
