Reading the passage

Our broad purpose prediction is to argue for what defense lawyers should do. This is a recommendation about their obligations, not simply a description of their work. Look for the view being defended and the reason the writer gives for it.

Working the answers

  • A

Dilemmas and competing views help set up the argument. But the writer goes further than showing that the role is complicated: the final paragraph argues that the twofold duty actually helps the client.

  • B
    Correct

This captures the central recommendation and its defense. Lawyers should respect their duty to court and society, and the writer argues that this “ultimately benefits the defendant” by producing sincere representation based on the merits. The broader duty complements an effective defense rather than merely competing with it.

  • C

The opening scholars set aside personal judgments of guilt, but the writer challenges that approach. Explaining why attorneys don't consider guilt important isn't the purpose of the argument as a whole.

  • D

Accepting a case is one decision discussed. The recommendation also concerns how to represent a client, including what claims to make and when to seek leniency. D narrows the argument to the earlier decision.

  • E

Democratic society is mentioned in the opening scholars' argument for representation. The writer doesn't offer a general account of how practicing law strengthens democratic values.
