Reading the passage
Why assume wine works exactly like every other alcoholic drink? That is the question behind the opening criticism. Scientists have generally treated alcohol as wine's only active ingredient, so they have rarely investigated wine as something distinct from beer or spirits. The contrast with the old belief that wine is healthful makes us expect research that challenges that assumption. Maybe something besides alcohol matters.
There is a second problem with the research approach: much of it examined excessive drinking. If we want to understand the effects of moderate wine consumption, studies of abuse may not give us the whole picture. This is not a claim that alcohol's harms disappear. The second paragraph expressly accepts negative effects, including impaired lipid processing that can raise blood lipid levels and contribute to heart disease.
Now we get findings that complicate the picture. Wine's alcohol is absorbed more slowly than alcohol from distilled spirits. In several European countries, heart-disease deaths declined as moderate wine consumption increased. Later studies found the same apparent effects for white and red wine, so the early red-wine-only finding does not survive as the final position.
But wait: an association between wine consumption and fewer deaths does not, by itself, tell us what caused the decline. Perhaps differences in diet or wealth could help explain a pattern like that. Those are possible alternative explanations, not facts supplied by the research here. We can keep that question in mind without losing track of what the author is trying to explain: why moderate wine consumption might have beneficial effects.
The last paragraph offers possible mechanisms. Wine consumption increases the activity of a naturally occurring compound that helps break down blood clots. Doctors use that compound to restore blood flow. Notice the precise claim: wine increases its activity. We are not told that wine itself contains the compound.
Wine also increases compounds that may protect against lipid damage. Then the author broadens the discussion beyond lipid processing. The inner walls of blood vessels and the stickiness of platelets matter, too. Wine appears to reduce wall thickness and platelet adhesiveness, effects presented as improvements. We do not have to memorize the technical vocabulary. We do need to remember the direction: less adhesiveness is the potentially helpful effect, not more clotting.
Finally, grape juice produces a similar decrease in platelet adhesiveness. That is especially interesting because it points toward something in grapes, rather than alcohol alone. It may help explain why treating wine as interchangeable with other alcoholic drinks misses something. Still, the language stays cautious: this may be a first step toward confirming the proposed explanation. One shared effect does not prove every claimed benefit or settle every causal question.
Keep two questions separate as we finish. Could wine have some beneficial effects even though alcohol also causes harm? The reported research suggests that it could. Do those benefits outweigh the harms overall? That is not established here. Our job is to understand this argument about possible benefits and their source, not turn it into advice to drink wine. The central idea is that naturally occurring grape compounds may help explain the apparent effects that the alcohol-only assumption obscured.
Naturally occurring grape compounds may explain the apparent cardiovascular benefits associated with moderate wine consumption.
