Reading the passage

My initial prediction is that the writer explores possible benefits of moderate wine consumption and argues that there may be something to them. None of these choices uses quite that wording. We need to see whether one describes the same purpose more precisely.

Working the answers

  • A

The writer doesn't recommend wine as a treatment. Investigating possible benefits is different from advising patients to drink it, particularly when the account also accepts harmful effects of alcohol.

  • B

The old popular belief that wine is healthful helps introduce the possibility being investigated. It isn't the target of the criticism.

  • C
    Correct

This refines the prediction: the research responds to the assumption that alcohol is wine's only active ingredient. The findings and the proposed grape compounds challenge that assumption. Explaining the apparent benefits serves the larger purpose of correcting this scientific misconception.

  • D

The new findings support the writer's case. Their relevance isn't being attacked. Our own questions about causation shouldn't be substituted for the writer's purpose.

  • E

The grape-compound hypothesis is presented favorably. Even if we regarded it as revolutionary, the author is developing support for it, not countering it.
