Reading the passage

We can describe the sequence plainly: here's one way to teach about other cultures; here's an objection; here's a second way that responds to it; here's an objection to that, too. The goal throughout is multicultural understanding.

Working the answers

  • A

We get difficulties with the proposed methods, but no corresponding discussion of the benefits of achieving the goal.

  • B

This is stronger than what the discussion establishes. Criticizing two approaches doesn't rule out the goal altogether. In fact, the ending reports what critics think genuine understanding would require.

  • C
    Correct

Two proposed means of achieving multicultural understanding are presented, each followed by an objection. The second tries to fix the first proposal's problem, but then faces a criticism of its own methods.

  • D

The methods change; the goal doesn't. No one replaces multicultural understanding with a radically different objective.

  • E

We aren't defending the possibility of multicultural understanding by pointing out how desirable it is. The discussion develops the objections instead of answering them with an appeal to the goal's value.
