Reading the passage

What happened just before “This succession”? The settlements were abandoned, and the land returned to mixed hardwoods. So we're looking for that change in vegetation: pine-dominant forest gives way to a mixture of hardwoods. Keep the order straight.

Working the answers

  • A

Clearing followed by burning is an earlier sequence of human actions. The reference here is to the forest change after settlements were abandoned.

  • B

This reverses the change. The relevant shift is from pine forest back to mixed forest, not mixed tropical forest becoming pine forest.

  • C

These are Native settlements, not European ones. More basically, succession refers to the change in forest composition, not the arrival and departure of settlers.

  • D
    Correct

The land “returned to mixed hardwoods” after settlement ended. Those hardwoods followed the pine-dominant forest associated with regular burning. The last sentence says that same replacement occurred elsewhere.

  • E

The sequence isn't pines followed by settlement. It's one type of forest followed by another after settlements were abandoned.
