Reading the passage

My first prediction is negative: the author thinks traditional ethics teaching needs improvement. But how negative? Paragraph two grants that its conceptual clarity can be valuable. That concession matters when the choices ask about all of the method's effects.

Working the answers

  • A

Disapproving of every effect conflicts with the value given to conceptual clarity. The criticism is not an unqualified rejection of everything the method produces.

  • B

The author doesn't withhold judgment; the limitations are stated plainly. And, again, not all of the effects are disapproved of.

  • C

Partial disapproval fits, but indifference doesn't. The author cares about the effects on students and patients and evaluates both the benefit and the shortcomings.

  • D

Recognizing conceptual clarity might sound like partial approval. But the second half still fails: the author cannot disapprove of every effect while identifying one as valuable.

  • E
    Correct

This refines our initial negative prediction. The method falls short of preparing students for everyday human problems, yet some of its effects—particularly conceptual clarity—are useful. Criticizing the approach overall is compatible with recognizing that benefit.
