One of the greatest challenges facing medical students(481 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(21 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

My first thought is that moral imagination means really thinking through the ethical issues in a story. Let's make that more precise by looking at the surrounding sentence: we engage with a story that isn't our own but still recognize why it matters. We're trying to understand someone else's experience.

Working the answers

  • A

Curiosity might keep someone following a plot, but that doesn't capture the ethical and personal engagement described here. Wondering what happens next isn't necessarily empathizing with the people involved.

  • B

Picking a side is the extra requirement. Readers consider another viewpoint; they aren't required to identify with one side of a controversy.

  • C

Understanding a dilemma fits. Inventing creative solutions goes beyond what we're told readers must do. They can engage with the conflict without solving it.

  • D
    Correct

The story is “not as one's own” but is still recognizable and worthy of attention. The next discussion of adopting another person's viewpoint develops the same idea. D captures understanding and empathizing with people in a moral situation without being a participant yourself.

  • E

Acting on different principles isn't the same as reading and thinking about another perspective. And the point is understanding people, not variety for its own sake.
