Reading the passage
A small initial drop doesn't have to stay small. The final paragraph shows how remaining snow and changes in the jet stream could amplify cooling within a region. That's the response to the study's modest broad effect: explain how a more dramatic regional result is still possible.
Working the answers
- A
The year without a summer illustrates the possible result. It isn't compared with other feedback loops to show how it differs from them.
- B
The slight hemispheric cooling is the starting point, not what this paragraph tries to explain. The question is how that small change could grow into a much larger regional one.
- CCorrect
The snow reflects sunlight away, adding cooling; a shifted jet stream could then bring in more polar air. Those steps show how regional conditions could be significantly affected by an initially small temperature drop.
- D
El Niño's role belongs to the earlier discussion of separating temperature influences. The final paragraph doesn't explain why researchers overlook it.
- E
The writer describes how feedback could work. No flaw in a current model is identified, and no change to that model is proposed. Explaining a process isn't the same as revising our explanation of it.
