Reading the passage

Temperature changes for more than one reason. If we ignore El Niño, we could mistake its fading warmth for volcanic cooling—or miss some volcanic cooling because El Niño offsets it. We're trying to identify one cause's contribution while overlooking another influence on the same result.

What we’re looking for

That's the relationship to match. A general mistake in counting or measuring isn't enough by itself.

Working the answers

  • A

This concerns finding the weight of part of a package. It doesn't attribute a change to one cause while ignoring a separate cause of that change. El Niño isn't a component of the eruption; it's another influence on temperature.

  • B

Coin value doesn't tell us how many coins there are. We aren't overlooking a second cause of a change in the number of coins.

  • C

Magnification concerns how large something appears; the task concerns its shape. This doesn't reproduce the two competing influences on the same changing quantity.

  • D

False reports could make a crime count inaccurate, so this does involve misleading data. But El Niño creates a real temperature effect, not a false report of one. The problem is wrongly attributing that effect to an eruption.

  • E
    Correct

The change in average age matches the change in temperature. Births match the volcanic eruptions we credit for it. The arriving immigrants' ages match El Niño: another influence that could explain or offset the change. Ignoring them could make us overstate or understate the contribution of births.
