Reading the passage
Paragraph 1 gives Brakel's reasons for objecting to video. Paragraph 2 brings in the critics: formal reminders can convey perjury penalties outside court, and courtroom stress may disrupt even truthful testimony. So its job is to set out opposition to his position. Keep that reporting role separate from the writer's more developed response later.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The paragraph details two objections to Brakel's claims about courtroom testimony. Both challenge the supposed benefit of requiring witnesses to be physically present.
- B
These objections undermine the opening argument; they don't supply its main support.
- C
The paragraph doesn't praise the strength of Brakel's reasoning. It tells us how his critics respond to it.
- D
The writer ultimately develops a case against Brakel, but this paragraph itself reports what critics “argue” and “suggest.” Explicitly aligning the writer's stance with theirs isn't its primary function.
- E
The critics discuss what witnesses know and how stress affects them. They aren't laying out recommendations for how courts should arrange testimony. This substitutes a proposed policy for the objections actually reported.
