Reading the passage
We've already identified both main points, so we need titles that fit those ideas. A is about an economist discovering real economic activity inside a game. B is about when virtual property and transactions should be taxed.
What we’re looking for
A title can be broad without being vague. It should capture what the writer is doing, not simply name a person or detail that appears along the way. And because these are paired titles, both must work.
Working the answers
- A
A describes Castronova's discovery, not a collection of his economic theories. The second title is narrower still: intellectual property rights are one example in B's opening, not the subject of its tax analysis.
- BCorrect
The new economic territory is the real-world value of virtual goods and currency. Taxing virtual property covers B's distinctions among acquiring loot, making ordinary in-game trades, selling for cash, and transacting in intentionally commercial games. Both titles fit the central work of their respective passages.
- C
A mentions that millions play these games, but it doesn't examine their growth. B concerns the tax treatment of virtual property, not virtual reality and law generally. The first title alone is enough to eliminate the pair.
- D
A explains what players are doing; it doesn't instruct readers how to make money. Avoiding a tax shelter is part of B's conclusion, but even a plausible second title cannot fix the first.
- E
A new economic paradigm suggests a broader change in economic thinking than A establishes. And untapped revenue captures only one side of B: the writer also argues that ordinary play and some transactions should remain untaxed.
