Reading the passage

How does the field-of-sight account work? It describes the observer's orientation and the rotation used to look from an object to its reflected image. It can explain the appearance through that relationship without putting a second real chair behind the mirror. That gives us a concrete contrast with the front-to-back explanation: the first account does not need the false premise the author identifies in the second.

Working the answers

  • A

The traditional preference described at the end is for separating the observer from the phenomenon. The field-of-sight account instead includes the observer. We are not told that a desire for simplification produced it.

  • B
    Correct

The explanation depends on how the observer's field of sight rotates, not on the reflected image being another three-dimensional object. Its stated mechanism therefore avoids treating the imagined chair as real.

  • C

This says the opposite of the opening paragraph. The explanation expressly makes the reversal relative to the observer's position and orientation.

  • D

Explaining a relationship between movement and appearance does not require assuming that observers fail to understand what they see. No such assumption is given.

  • E

The author argues that the observer's actions must be considered when explaining an image. Including rotation is therefore not the stated reason an explanation fails. This objection turns an essential part of the account into a supposed defect.
