Reading the passage

Why does imagining another chair inside the mirror feel so natural? Because we are used to thinking in terms of objects, not separating raw visual information from the mental representation we form from it. Seeing the reflection readily prompts the familiar idea of a chair occupying space. That habit makes the front-to-back explanation easy to grasp, even though the author identifies a false premise in it.

Working the answers

  • A

The opening asks why mirror images do not ordinarily appear reversed top-to-bottom. It does not offer a top-to-bottom explanation for us to accept. Mentioning a possible direction is not the same as presenting a theory.

  • B
    Correct

The third paragraph expressly links our habit of using mental constructs to the front-to-back explanation's natural appeal. A familiar way of representing objects helps us understand that picture of the reflection; it does not guarantee the picture is accurate.

  • C

Nothing says this habit helps us challenge complex explanations. Here it helps make one explanation intuitive, rather than making us better at criticizing it.

  • D

We generally rely on the correspondence between perceptions and mental constructs. The habit does not help us reject that normally reliable relationship; mirrors illustrate a case in which relying on it can mislead.

  • E

The author does not say that the habit makes us overemphasize simulation. The problem is that we naturally picture the apparent object as though it were real, not that we place too much weight on identifying the image as simulated.
