Reading the passage
Cortez describes his present fight as a little mist, compared with the thunderstorms he has already weathered. The fight is what he is describing; the weather supplies the image used to describe it. We want that figurative image.
What we’re looking for
Think of calling very hot coffee lava. The coffee is the subject, and lava is the image that conveys the heat. Here, mist conveys how unimpressive Cortez finds the current opposition.
Working the answers
- A
Cattle drives are historical events that Kiansis records. They aren't the figurative image used to describe Cortez's fight.
- BCorrect
Mist stands for the relatively easy fight. The contrast with thunderstorms lets Cortez boast that he has survived much harder encounters.
- C
The cypress tree appears in the quoted closing verse, but it isn't identified as a metaphor. An image in a song isn't automatically figurative.
- D
The fight is the actual encounter being compared with weather. This names the subject of the metaphor rather than the image used to characterize it.
- E
Stampedes belong to the cattle-drive example. They aren't the metaphor in Cortez's boast.
