The characteristic smell or taste of a plant,(453 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(21 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

Map all three pieces before looking for the analogy. The plant is the whole system. Its primary substances support basic internal functioning; its secondary substances supply distinctive characteristics and other useful effects, such as attraction and defense, without a known role in those internal processes.

What we’re looking for

We therefore need core operating components and a second set of useful features with a different job. Secondary doesn't mean worthless, and it doesn't mean a backup that takes over the primary substances' work.

Working the answers

  • A

The hospital can match the whole system and electricity can match a basic requirement. But the generator is another source of that same requirement when the usual supply fails. Secondary substances aren't reserve proteins or carbohydrates waiting to take over.

  • B
    Correct

The car matches the plant; the engine and transmission match components needed for basic operation. Paint and taillights provide a distinctive appearance and useful protection or safety functions, even though the car can run without them. That matches different functions outside the basic operating process, not mere decoration without value.

  • C

The electrical parts supply power needed by the mechanical parts. Both contribute to running the manufacturing process. Being less directly involved doesn't give the electrical components the separate role that secondary substances have in the comparison.

  • D

This describes two interacting components of one braking system. Both work together to produce the basic function of stopping; it doesn't add a second class of features doing something different.

  • E

Internal memory and external disks are alternative places to store the same necessary program. A choice of storage location doesn't reproduce the distinction between basic operating substances and other useful substances.
