Reading the passage
The New Women pursued freedom and innovation in both what they wrote about and how they wrote it. They used fantasy, imagined different worlds, and experimented with methods for exploring women's consciousness.
What we’re looking for
That's broad background, not yet a precise generalization. We should return to the relationship between their goals and techniques when checking the answers.
Working the answers
- A
We aren't told which style brings about more social change. Describing literary experiments doesn't show that those experiments actually changed customs, much less that they did so better than detached writing.
- B
The nostalgia belongs to the local colorists, not the New Women. Even there, missing parts of an earlier life wouldn't necessarily mean regretting new opportunities. You can remember parts of school fondly without wishing you hadn't graduated.
- C
The account connects social and literary change in this setting. That doesn't establish that social changes inevitably produce new techniques. One historical account cannot support that universal requirement.
- DCorrect
The New Women experimented with impressionistic methods to represent previously unexplored dimensions of women's inner lives (paragraph 4). The goal of representing something previously neglected helps generate a new way of writing. That is the relationship D generalizes.
- E
This sounds like Chopin's earlier use of local-colorist conventions, not the New Women's innovations. It also adds a ranking—most accurate—that the account doesn't establish.
