Reading the passage
The third paragraph raises a worry about custom illustrations and then answers it. My rough prediction is that we're responding to an objection and explaining why these pictures can be useful.
What we’re looking for
Look for the job that response does, rather than just one detail the paragraph includes.
Working the answers
- A
The author defends a legitimate use for these images, but the paragraph doesn't make increasing their use its central proposal. Its immediate job is answering the distortion objection.
- BCorrect
This is sharper than my initial prediction. Paragraph two addresses pictures that misrepresent the facts; paragraph three asks whether a technically accurate picture might still give a misleading impression through emphasis or color. It's a variant of the earlier bias concern. The author answers with professional standards and an explanation of why selecting relevant details can improve understanding.
- C
Textbooks' suitability really is at issue, and the first paragraph presented an argument for using them. But rejecting that argument alone doesn't capture this paragraph's purpose. The textbook comparison helps answer the new concern about how custom images present information.
- D
The author doesn't merely describe the controversy in more detail. The paragraph takes a side and gives a response to an objection.
- E
We do get differences between the two kinds of illustrations. But that description serves the rebuttal: leaving out unnecessary detail can clarify the injury instead of distorting it. B explains why the author makes the comparison.
