Reading the passage
What is the whole discussion doing? My rough description would be an update on research into ancient textiles: here were the obstacles, and here's how researchers have made progress anyway. We're being told about methods already used successfully, rather than asked to adopt a future plan.
Working the answers
- A
No controversy over the methods is developed, so there isn't a defense against that controversy.
- B
This is a report of what researchers have done. Calling it a set of recommendations changes that into advice about what they should do next.
- CCorrect
This sharpens our rough “update” prediction. The limited, perishable evidence made textile history difficult to study, and the newer methods helped researchers cope with that difficulty. C captures the movement from the opening problem to the successful approaches.
- D
The author describes changes in practice but doesn't organize the discussion around rejecting commonly held views about research methods.
- E
We do get findings, such as the identification of loom weights and the dress for the smaller statue. But those illustrate how researchers test ideas. The overall focus is the methods and their success despite limited evidence, not a summary of researchers' hypotheses.
