By the time Bentham turned his interest to(439 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(7 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

We've already predicted that Bentham helped move evidence law toward admitting more relevant information. The ending makes his principle the new starting point, though with more exceptions than he wanted.

What we’re looking for

That's the change to keep in view. The answer may also capture the writer's judgment about it, rather than simply repeat the name of Bentham's principle.

Working the answers

  • A

This stops at Bentham questioning rules. It leaves out his proposal to admit more evidence, the problems with that proposal, and its eventual influence. We need more than the initial challenge.

  • B
    Correct

“Beneficial” initially gives me pause: did the writer actually call the reform good? Look at what it improves. The old technicalities could prevent the truth from emerging, and Bentham's approach lets juries hear more relevant evidence. “Imperfect” captures the risks developed in paragraph 4. Together, the two judgments fit the qualified improvement described at the end, even though this isn't how we first phrased our prediction.

  • C

The writer identifies limitations, but doesn't end by calling for a new examination of Bentham's principle. The ending explains how a modified version became the accepted approach.

  • D

This makes an inevitable, general claim about rules of evidence. We are examining a particular reform and its benefits and limits, not establishing what every such rule must involve.

  • E

Resistance to reform explains part of the old system's persistence. But the account goes on to describe a change that did occur. E leaves that development out.
