Reading the passage

We've already predicted the main point: GNP per capita is an imperfect measure because it leaves out important features of people's lives. I expect a title that criticizes relying on that number. The wording may emphasize what we should look at instead.

Working the answers

  • A

The meaning of GNP hasn't changed. The opening defines it; the rest questions how well it measures economic health. This isn't a history of a shifting definition.

  • B

A defense points in the wrong direction. We hear the economists' defense so that the writer can challenge it.

  • C
    Correct

This expresses the positive side of the argument. Human indicators are preferable because they capture conditions that GNP misses. The first paragraph explicitly calls them “sounder measures.” Our prediction focused on GNP's shortcomings, but a title doesn't need to name GNP to capture the resulting preference for other measures.

  • D

Distribution is an important reason the average can mislead us, but it isn't the whole argument. Nutrition, infant survival, literacy, and other human conditions matter too. This title narrows the discussion to one supporting issue.

  • E

We aren't changing the GNP formula. We're questioning whether that number should be the sole measure of economic health. Looking at other indicators is different from calculating GNP in a new way.
