Painter Frida Kahlo (1910–1954) often used harrowing images(450 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(8 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

Kahlo repeatedly uses Aztec imagery to express personal and political concerns. Then we get a specific painting that shows her doing it. I'd describe the organization as a general statement followed by an example.

Working the answers

  • A

The American and Mexican sides of the painting do contrast. But that contrast sits inside the example. It doesn't describe the whole paragraph's movement from Kahlo's recurring use of symbols to one painting that illustrates it.

  • B

We aren't resolving a conflict between ideas. The painting's contrast remains a contrast; it isn't reconciled at the end.

  • C

The imagery does connect personal struggle with national emergence, and life with death. But listing related themes misses how the paragraph develops: it makes a general claim, then spends most of its space illustrating that claim with the border painting.

  • D

No principle is introduced whose implications are then worked out. The writer describes a recurring feature of Kahlo's work and shows us an instance.

  • E
    Correct

The opening says Kahlo “repeatedly employed Aztec symbols” and explains their meanings. The self-portrait follows with “for example.” Its flag and contrasting national imagery make that general account concrete.
