Reading the passage
A temperate grassland is closer to the equator than an arctic grassland, but farther away than a tropical one. From the opening pattern, I'd expect its species diversity to fall between the two. Keep the habitat type the same: we're comparing grasslands at different latitudes, not every possible ecosystem.
Working the answers
- A
This compares a temperate grassland with a tropical forest. The opening pattern holds habitat type constant, so it doesn't establish this comparison.
- B
We can't assume this particular region suffered severe disruption. Paragraph 2 says ice ages caused less disruption in some temperate regions than in others.
- C
Paragraph 3 expressly says abundant living matter can accompany low species diversity. A large amount of living matter doesn't establish high diversity.
- DCorrect
This keeps the habitat type constant and puts the larger species pool closer to the equator. Paragraph 4 also identifies regional species pools as the relevant difference between similar habitats at different latitudes. Both parts fit the comparison.
- E
The final paragraph compares tropical and arctic subgroups. It doesn't establish that isolated groups in this temperate grassland are likely to survive and become new species; isolation alone doesn't ensure either step.
