Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main idea: the histories of Nsibidi and Bamum may help explain how Egyptian hieroglyphics developed. We want some version of that tentative claim covering both examples, not a definitive origin story that the discussion never establishes.
Working the answers
- A
This leaves out Bamum and settles an influence in one direction. The shared beliefs suggest possible connections; they don't establish that Nsibidi probably influenced Egyptian writing.
- B
The ending presents invention by one person as a real possibility, not an extreme improbability. This reverses the point of the Bamum example.
- CCorrect
“May shed some light” in the opening matches this cautious claim. Both West African systems contribute possible insights into Egyptian development, without proving exactly what happened.
- D
Njoya's example offers a model of a single inventor creating a complex system. It doesn't show how Egyptian writing developed specifically out of Nsibidi. This combines two different lines of discussion into an unsupported origin story.
- E
The ending says hieroglyphics could have represented sounds from the start. This instead rules that out and asserts an earlier pictorial stage that the discussion leaves uncertain.
