Reading the passage
Ford's automotive research and development made a new material available. Noguchi then used that material for a different purpose: sculpture. I want that same transfer from one field to another.
What we’re looking for
Keep Fuller separate. He suggested the material to Noguchi, but this question asks about Ford and Noguchi, not Fuller and Noguchi.
Working the answers
- A
The architect praises the material, prompting a dealer to market it. That isn't the relationship between making a material available for one purpose and adapting it to a different use.
- B
The manufacturer recommends a use to the skier. That resembles Fuller's role as the person suggesting a material more than Ford's role in making the automotive material available. It doesn't give us the same transfer between uses.
- CCorrect
The shipping-container producer corresponds to Ford: a material is put to use in one field. The climbing expert corresponds to Noguchi: someone recognizes a different use for that material. Shipping straps become a component of climbing ropes, just as an automotive material becomes a sculptural medium. The analogy needn't say that either person personally invented the material.
- D
The editor rejects the suggested software and finds something else. Noguchi actually used the chrome-nickel steel; he didn't reject it in favor of another material.
- E
Advice leads the landscaper to investigate several similar materials. We need an actual adaptation of the material already used in another field, not merely advice followed by exploration.
