Reading the passage
What are the cosmologists doing in the last paragraph? They have part of an answer and hope it will help them build a fuller one. My prediction is a partial contribution that points toward additional contributions, all aimed at the same unsolved problem.
Working the answers
- A
The family member points the child to a source of instructions. We don't have that pattern of asking someone who recommends a book; we have one contribution toward a larger solution.
- B
This is tempting if we call the skateboard a partial success. But the child changes the goal from buying a bicycle to buying something else. The cosmologists still want to explain the missing mass; they haven't replaced that goal with a cheaper alternative.
- C
Learning to appreciate an unexpected gift isn't a search for the remaining pieces of an answer.
- DCorrect
Money from one sibling supplies part of the amount needed, and the child looks to the others for the rest. Neutrinos likewise supply a possible part of the explanation and encourage further investigation of elementary particles. Both involve building toward the same goal rather than declaring the partial contribution sufficient.
- E
Completing chores is a requirement before playing. It isn't a partial contribution toward solving a larger problem.
