Reading the passage
What makes the reasoning somewhat complex? The final sentence contrasts how the steroid rule first appears with its deeper justification. At first, it looks like making athletes protect their own health. But the writer says it can be justified by preventing harm.
What we’re looking for
I don't have a neat substitute for the phrase yet. We need an answer explaining that connection, rather than merely repeating another fact about the athletes.
Working the answers
- A
The private sports organization illustrates reasoning that also has applications in criminal law. That doesn't mean the argument depends on two layers of law, one for each sector.
- B
Understanding the rule's function is mentioned as a condition for athletes' consent, so this isn't simply absent. But the phrase describes the less obvious connection between the restriction and preventing harm. The need to explain a rule to those affected isn't itself that connection.
- CCorrect
One athlete's steroid use affects the choices of others: risk their health to remain competitive, or keep their health and lose a fair chance to win. That is how forbidding the act can prevent harm beyond merely protecting its user. The relationship takes an extra step to explain, as the driving convention did earlier.
- D
The argument doesn't try to persuade athletes to value health as highly as winning. It begins with both interests and explains how a shared rule protects them.
- E
The two examples involve coordination. The writer doesn't use a need for coordination to justify rules that have nothing to do with it.
