- BHeavy tapestry fabrics(12 more words not shown)

- DIf a fabric(18 more words not shown)
- EHeavy tapestry fabrics(14 more words not shown)
Reading the argument
Use this fabric only where it won't need frequent washing.
That gives us a practical way to read the rule. Imagine a T-shirt you wash after every wear: that would be the wrong use for heavy tapestry fabric. The passage goes further and excludes every type of clothing, including skirts and jackets. Swags and balloon valances are examples of suitable uses; the passage tells us they're window treatments, so we don't need to know their precise designs.
What we’re looking for
For the most-supported statement, my first thought is that those window treatments must not need frequent laundering. Otherwise, they wouldn't qualify under the opening restriction. Keep that requirement and the blanket exclusion of clothing in mind as we check the choices.
Working the answers
- A
We aren't given a rule restricting other fabrics. Heavy tapestry could be suitable for a swag without being the only fabric suitable for one. Knowing where this fabric can be used doesn't tell us that every other kind must be ruled out.
- B
The passage gives swags and balloon valances as examples, not a complete list of every suitable application. There could be another nonclothing use that doesn't need frequent washing. B takes the two named uses and treats them as the only permitted ones.
- C
This makes the same kind of jump with a broader category. The listed examples are window treatments, but we aren't told that every appropriate use must be a window treatment. We know the washing restriction and that clothing is excluded; we don't have an exclusive window-use rule.
- DCorrect
This follows from the clothing exclusion rather than the laundering prediction I first considered. Heavy tapestry fabric is not appropriate for any clothing, so it cannot be appropriate for a skirt or jacket. If a fabric is appropriate for one of those garments, it therefore isn't heavy tapestry fabric. We don't have to identify what kind of fabric it is to rule this kind out.
- E
Skirts and jackets illustrate the exclusion; they don't limit it. The passage says no types of clothing belong among the appropriate applications. A different garment would still be clothing, so it wouldn't create the exception E claims.
