Reading the passage
The final paragraph spells out what preserving Taruskin's approach requires when enduring art seems to challenge elite values. The critic must say it actually expresses those ideals in a hidden way, even if the patrons openly disliked it. We are identifying the view this interpretation commits him to, not deciding whether we agree with it.
Working the answers
- A
Nothing ranks the most talented artists throughout history according to whether they secretly expressed elite ideology. The fourth paragraph mentions talented artists, but that does not supply this sweeping criterion for identifying the most talented.
- B
We receive no account of the most successful artists working today. A historical interpretation of art does not establish who currently succeeds or why.
- CCorrect
This gives the commitment described at the end: enduring high art that seems to undermine elite ideology must nevertheless embody or support it in some hidden way. The patrons' overt disapproval is treated as compatible with their unrecognized ideals being revealed.
- D
The social class of the patron is not automatically the social class of the artist. We know which groups could commission works; we are not told that artists expressing elite ideology typically belonged to those groups themselves.
- E
Some talented artists worked on the margins, and some art subverted elite values. Neither point establishes that the most talented artists across history were specifically those who performed subtle subversion. This adds a ranking rule the account never supplies.
