Reading the argument
How can Pat get the coupon at Walnut Lane?
At first, that seems to clash with the Main Street restriction. Pat hasn't rented more than ten videos, and people in that category appear to be sent to Main Street. But read the whole rule: it applies to members of the Frequent Viewers club.
The members are split into two groups. More than ten rentals means collecting the coupon where the member last rented a movie. Ten or fewer rentals means collecting it only at Main Street. Exactly ten belongs in that second group; “not more than ten” includes ten.
Now return to Pat. If Pat were a member, the second rule would forbid collecting the coupon at Walnut Lane. Yet the passage says Pat can collect it there. To keep all the facts true, Pat must not be a member. The opening statement says members can receive coupons, not that only members can receive them.
What we’re looking for
That's the inference I'd look for: someone outside the club can get the coupon. Pat is our example.
Working the answers
- A
This switches a restriction on some members into a restriction on everyone using Main Street. Members with ten or fewer rentals must use Main Street, but that doesn't mean nobody else can. A member with more rentals might have last rented there, and a nonmember might also be eligible there under rules we haven't been given.
- B
A rule for members with ten or fewer rentals doesn't prove that any current member falls into that category. Perhaps every member rented more than ten. Pat doesn't establish otherwise, because Pat cannot be a member given the Walnut Lane eligibility.
- C
Each membership category limits the member to one location. Pat's unusual eligibility doesn't show that a member has an exception, because Pat isn't a member. We also aren't told that Pat can collect at both Main Street and Walnut Lane; only Walnut Lane is established. C needs more than either the rules or Pat's case provides.
- DCorrect
Pat can receive the coupon and must be outside the Frequent Viewers club. Otherwise, Pat's rental count would restrict collection to Main Street, contradicting the stated ability to collect at Walnut Lane. One person is enough to establish that some nonmembers can get the coupon.
- E
Nothing says renting a movie at Main Street would make Pat lose eligibility for the coupon. The rules about members' last rental locations don't apply to Pat, and no rule says a nonmember forfeits a coupon by renting from a particular branch. This predicted loss isn't supported.
