Reading the passage

Start with the direction of the attitude: the account is broadly sympathetic to Glück's view. It explains her reasons and lets her answer the critics. But the writer doesn't break into strong praise of her greatness. So I'd look for quiet support, then distinguish it from the other kinds of positive response.

Working the answers

  • A

The writer doesn't dismiss her position. Explaining the critics' objections and then presenting her response isn't an ultimate rejection of what she says.

  • B

Acceptance fits better than dismissal, but “grudging” adds reluctance or resentment. Nothing indicates that the writer accepts her position unwillingly.

  • C

The sympathetic presentation and concluding response support more than detached indifference. The writer doesn't simply leave the two sides standing with no indication of sympathy.

  • D
    Correct

“Tacit endorsement” means approval conveyed without being announced outright. The organization gives Glück's reasoning and reply the final word, without explicitly declaring that she is right or offering extravagant praise.

  • E

Enthusiastic acclaim would require more overt, emphatic praise than we receive. A sympathetic explanation of her views doesn't establish that stronger tone.
