Reading the passage
Why mention Locke in an account of Porter? Locke had already surveyed African American art, so Porter wasn't starting an entirely new field. What was new was his attention to African sources. The comparison helps us see what made his work different.
Working the answers
- A
Earlier scholarship doesn't automatically establish dependence. We aren't told that Porter's book relied on Locke's work.
- BCorrect
Neither of Locke’s books examined the crucial question of earlier African influences, while Porter’s book did (paragraph 2). That difference explains the contribution the writer is emphasizing.
- C
We aren't told that Porter's book was little known outside universities, much less that Locke's books explain its reception.
- D
This reverses the comparison. Locke studied African American art, but he didn't address the African connections that distinguished Porter's work.
- E
Teaching at the same university doesn't establish that Locke inspired Porter's decision to publish. No such influence is described.
