Reading the passage
The last sentence of A links frequent arts participation with voting and volunteer work. To challenge that connection, we want evidence that the expected civic involvement isn't showing up. Low museum attendance alone isn't enough: we need something about civic activity, not merely whether people attend art events.
Working the answers
- A
This tells us fewer people than expected attended the museum. It says nothing about whether those who attended were likely to vote or volunteer.
- B
Less funding accompanies less theater participation, but civic involvement is missing. If voting or volunteering stayed strong despite that decline, we would at least have evidence bearing on the proposed connection. B doesn't provide it.
- C
This concerns private donations during periods of public funding. It doesn't address the link between arts participation and civic activity.
- D
This goes in the opposite direction. People involved in amateur theater are also involved in volunteer rescue organizations. That positive association supports the claim we were asked to challenge.
- ECorrect
A tax-funded arts program has operated for ten years, yet voting rates haven't increased. That gives us a reason to question the civic payoff A associates with arts participation. It doesn't conclusively disprove the final sentence: we aren't told exactly how participation changed, and other factors could affect turnout. But among these choices, it supplies the relevant civic outcome going against the expected benefit.
