Reading the argument
Why couldn't the same commercial appeal to different kinds of people?
I can see the benefit of a consistent campaign. Imagine an insurer repeatedly using a memorable mascot: seeing that character may make you think of that company immediately. A campaign that moves between serious information and offbeat humor might be harder to recognize as one brand.
The author nevertheless favors variety because auto-insurance customers are demographically diverse. That could make sense if different groups respond to different approaches. But diversity among customers doesn't itself establish that a single recognizable approach couldn't work across those groups.
What we’re looking for
To strengthen the argument, I'd initially look for a reason varied advertising helps reach these customers more effectively. Perhaps a single approach can't appeal across the different groups. That would help connect a diverse audience to the value of a varied campaign.
Working the answers
- A
This makes a narrowly targeted campaign look more promising: it can sometimes reach people outside its intended group. That doesn't supply a reason to prefer Roadwise's variety. If one approach also attracts a wider audience, diversity among customers becomes less of an obstacle to using it.
- B
This emphasizes the value of building a recognizable identity, which was my initial concern about a varied campaign. It doesn't explain why variety is smart for these customers. We shouldn't assume variety makes a consistent identity impossible, but B supplies no connection between a diverse audience and the advantage the author claims.
- C
Auto-insurance commercials influencing fewer people than other commercials doesn't tell us which auto-insurance strategy is better. A varied campaign could outperform a uniform campaign or underperform it while the comparison with other products remained true. We need evidence about the choice facing Roadwise, not the effectiveness of advertising a different product.
- DCorrect
A campaign aimed at one group can do more than fail to attract other groups: it can put them off. That gives a company with a diverse customer base a reason to avoid building its whole campaign around one demographic's preferences.
Variety offers a way to address different audiences instead of repeatedly using one narrowly targeted approach. D doesn't guarantee that every Roadwise commercial pleases everyone, or that its varied campaign never alienates anyone. It identifies a disadvantage of the narrower alternative that makes the author's recommendation more convincing.
- E
Poor content could undermine either strategy. A uniform campaign can be badly written, and a varied campaign can be badly written too. We aren't told Roadwise's content falls short, and the answer doesn't explain why variety would help it reach its diverse audience. The quality of execution doesn't settle this choice of approach.
