Reading the passage
Which plate goes under, and which edge goes first? The second paragraph answers both. It says the second plate's motion is faster than the first plate's, and then explains that the faster plate's front edge consequently sinks beneath the other plate (paragraph 2). The word “its” refers to that faster second plate. Picture it catching up from behind: its front edge reaches the slower plate and descends underneath. Our answer needs both details, faster plate and leading edge.
Working the answers
- A
The leading edge goes under, not the trailing edge. This also assigns that edge to the slower plate when the sentence identifies the faster plate.
- B
“Leading edge” is right, but the plate is wrong. Don't let the correct edge hide the reversed comparison. The second plate is faster, and its edge becomes subducted; the slower plate isn't the one descending in this description.
- C
This identifies the faster plate but substitutes its trailing edge. The sentence expressly identifies the leading edge, the front of the plate that catches up.
- DCorrect
The leading edge of the faster plate goes beneath the slower plate. This preserves both the speed comparison and the edge named in the text.
- E
The explanation compares speeds, not sizes. We have no basis for identifying the descending plate as the smaller one or the other plate as the larger one.
